On
26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake located off the west coast
of Northern Sumatra, triggered tsunami wave, killing tens of thousands in
Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Somalia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Maldives.
This event occured in the Indian Ocean where there is no effective tsumani alert system. In the Pacific Ocean, a network of Tsunami Sensors provide early warning of potential disaster.
In the Pacific, there is real danger that an earthquake anywhere along the Pacific Rim would cause a killer wave on the shores of places like Hawaii.
Off the coast of America, a tsunami sensor array is operated by the National Data Buoy Center. The sensors are are located off the coast of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and one south of the equator. Image above, credit NOAA/NDBC.
When a potential tsunami is detected, the altert is broadcast to warning centers in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, for and in Palmer, Alaska for the West Coast of the United States and Canada.
