National Recreation Trail
Named
for its stark grayish-white sheer cliffs, Whiteside Mountain boasts the
highest vertical drop east of the Mississippi and its south face can be
seen for a hundred miles. Access to the trailhead is easiest by taking
Whiteside Mountain Trail Road off U.S. Highway 64, halfway between Cashiers
and Highlands. The 2 mile loop trail - designated a National Recreation
Trail - will take you by several vista points on the way to the summit.
From the view to the south and east, you will see the headwaters of the
wild and scenic Chattooga River. Birding enthusiasts may have an opportunity
to view the endangered Peregrine Falcon.
Click on the binoculars to see a demonstration of Maptech Terrain Navigator displaying a 3-D rendering of the vista from a popular (dangerous) pull-off on Hwy. 64 near the county line - Cowee Gap. whiteside_maptech.jpg [Approx. 65 KB] opens in a new window.
