Capers,
accessed only by boat, remains undeveloped, not unchanged. With the
exception of a new dock on the island's southwest corner and a few old structures
on the island's interior, Capers boasts little improvement. That's
not to say that it remains the same as it was before recent hurricanes.
For one, there is beach now where many maps show none. The photo at
right shows the view across the inlet from Capers to Dewees Island.
Caper's Inlet is shallow, but it was deep enough that at one time folks
worried that small submarines could slip though our border. Local
lore is that towers, like the one shown in the photo, were constructed during
WWII as watches for amphibious invasion.
Once on the island, you can stretch your legs on a network of trails that will connect you with the wildlife. Like Bull Island, you will encounter alligators, deer, raccoons, loggerhead turtles, and numerous birds, including herons, egrets, ibises, bitterns, ospreys and eagles.
You will also encounter a horde of insects throughout the interior of the island and you'll go insane without a toxic slathering of DEET insect repellant. Better yet, wear a baja shirt* and use bug netting*.
