GPS Tour of California Wine Country
Paso
Robles Edition
The vicinity west of Paso Robles, California is well suited for growing extraordinary grapes. The area’s topography causes the formation of microclimates beneficial to grape production, and the soil is unique to any other area in California. The Templeton Gap, south and west of Paso Robles, is the gateway for a cooling afternoon marine layer flowing from the Pacific Ocean. This daily heating and cooling results in grapes ripening at a slower rate. Heavy rain from Fall storm systems, come later in the growing season compared to more northern appellations, allowing the Paso Robles grapes to grow to full maturity. All these factors combine to give Paso Robles vintners a competitive advantage against other world-class wine producers in the Napa, Sonoma, and Monterey appellations.
Note that the maps for some navigation systems do not accurately locate many of the wineries discussed here. Location information for this guide was acquired in the field by contributing author, Gary Epp. Download this GPS tour guide to stay on track, saving time driving around and spending more time in the tasting rooms.

Tour Route: This GPS tour guide is best followed in the order listed below, starting at the Casa de Caballos winery near Templeton, CA. Most of the tasting rooms are open before lunch and there are plenty of opportunities for picnicking along the way. The routing takes you back towards Paso Robles, then up and back down Vineyard Drive. Some diversions along the tour are included, like the Olive Ranch and Jack Creek Farms, which are great for kids. The last leg of the tour route ends on Highway 46 where at the end of the day you may opt to travel a bit farther west to see the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
