About 200 years ago, Lewis and Clark were given orders to find a route of commercial transport across the western United States. Their plan was to bridge the headwaters of the Missouri River, knowing little about what means were available to them on the other side of the great divide. The intrepid explorers found the Northwest Passage, but the meanderings, precipitous cascades, and long portages of a river route proved unfavorable to heavy commerce. Instead, Lewis and Clark are revered as explorers - not as the trailblazers of industrialism. The mere mention of their names strikes a cord of adventure with the source-seeking nature in all of us.
