to find Gold... yellow and red in the leaves of autumn. So, you'll want
to download this GPS map to escape the tourist mecca and find more serene
surroundings. Included with the GPS data are several route options for day
hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
But first, the driving route starts you out leaving the trappings of Dahlonega behind. Travel up through the foothills, crossing the AT at Woody Gap. Drive past scenic Lake Windfield Scott, or stop there to take the hikes.
The driving loop continues past the junction with the AT at Neels Gap and completes back in Dahlonega where you can finish the day by grubbing out at the Smith House.

Dahlonega really is a cool town aside from all the junk stores, t-shirt shacks, and snow cone stands. Though overshadowed by towns made famous by the California Gold Rush, Dahlonega preserves the history of the preceding Gold Rush of Georgia, which whetted society's appetite for domestic bullion.
