Mount Everest
Featuring: The 1953 Expedition Route
Mount
Everest is located in the Himalaya Mountains, on the boarder between China
where it is named Qomolangma, and Nepal where it is known as Sagarmatha.
It is the highest mountain in the world standing at (approximately) 29,030
feet - nearly 5 and 1/2 miles above sea level.
In May of 1953, "a Tibetan yak herder turned Sherpa role model and a New Zealand bee keeper turned Himalayan explorer" were the first to summit this ultimate challenge in climbing(1).
This GPS Map documents, best as possible, the route taken by Tenzing Norgay and Edmond Hillary in 1953. Today, this "South Col" route is the most popular route to the summit.
